Slow PCs aren't old PCs: measure before you replace

When a computer crawls, the reflex is to replace it — but the hardware is usually fine. Here's how to tell the difference, and why measuring first saves money, disruption and a pile of needless e-waste.

Every IT budget has a line item that's quietly bigger than it should be: replacing "old" computers. A machine feels slow, someone declares it past its prime, and a purchase order appears. Multiply that across a fleet and it's real money — often spent on a problem that a new machine doesn't actually fix.

Here's the thing most replacement decisions miss: slow and old are not the same thing. A three-year-old laptop that boots in two minutes usually isn't tired hardware. It's a machine buried under things it was never asked to prune — and a new one, six months later, ends up in exactly the same state.

Why machines slow down (and it's rarely the CPU)

The usual culprits are mundane and fixable:

  • Startup bloat. Every app that installed itself into startup, every updater and sync agent, all fighting for the first 90 seconds after login.
  • Background noise. Invisible helper processes holding memory that the app you're actually using could be given instead.
  • Storage pressure. A drive near full, thick with temp files, caches and update leftovers, has nowhere to breathe.
  • Settings drift. Power plans, indexing and visual effects quietly configured for anything but speed.

None of that is a hardware fault. It's accumulation — and accumulation is reversible.

Measure first, then decide

The mistake isn't replacing PCs; it's replacing them blind. Before spending on hardware, the honest question is: is this machine slow because of what's running on it, or because it genuinely can't keep up any more?

You answer that by measuring, not guessing. Look at what's actually consuming memory, disk and startup time on a slow machine, then apply safe, reversible optimisations — trim startup, reclaim memory from invisible background processes, clear genuine junk, right-size the power and performance settings — and measure again. The before/after tells you the truth:

  • If it's transformed, the hardware was never the problem, and you just saved the cost of a new machine.
  • If it's still struggling after a clean optimisation, now you have a defensible case for a replacement — with evidence, not a hunch.

There's a quieter benefit. Every PC you don't replace is hardware that doesn't get manufactured, shipped and thrown away. "Optimise before you replace" is good for the budget and good for the e-waste pile — the rare case where the cheaper choice is also the greener one.
